About Me

I am an Associate Professor at Södertörn University, Stockholm. My research focuses on European Union governance and public policy, with particular emphasis on EU policy-making, implementation, and compliance, and the political and institutional dynamics of EU regulation. I am especially interested in how EU rules are shaped, contested, and implemented under conditions of crisis, complexity, and institutional change, and what this implies for democratic legitimacy, differentiation, and policy outcomes across member states.

I am a work package leader in the SUPA project (Sustaining Public Administration in Modern Democracies), which examines how advanced democracies can reduce administrative overburdening by improving regulatory decision-making and strengthening administrative capacity in the face of ongoing rule growth. My work package focuses on the design and effectiveness of rule-offsetting mechanisms.

Across my work, a recurring theme is how governments' attempts to enhance flexibility, efficiency, or coordination can generate unintended consequences, including differentiated implementation, shifting power relations, and new forms of politicisation. My research connects debates on institutionalism, compliance, and policy change with empirically grounded analyses of EU governance in action. Methodologically, I work across the full spectrum of qualitative and quantitative approaches, both independently and in integrated mixed-methods designs.

Before joining Södertörn University, I held positions as Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, and Postdoctoral Fellow at Linnaeus University. I have also worked as a researcher at Copenhagen Business School and as a lecturer at the University of Vienna. I hold a Magister in Political Science from the University of Innsbruck, as well as an M.E.S. and a PhD in Political Science from the University of Vienna.
